LAKE CENTRAL VS E.C. CENTRAL FOOTBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 7 photos
  • ST. JOHN | Lake Central’s offense has generated plenty of highlight film against E.C. Central in recent years. It was the defense’s turn Saturday night as the Indians formed a brick wall that made moving the ball a near impossibility for the Times No. 8 Cardinals. Gelen Robinson registered three sacks and K.J. Singleton returned an interception 15 yards for touchdown as Lake Central pulled away late for a 24-0 victory at the Burial Grounds. "We needed to come out and make plays,” Singleton said. “I saw the ball coming, and I knew it was my chance to make something happen.” Neither offense was particularly sharp moving the ball in the first half as the teams combined for 11 possessions and just two scores before halftime. Lake Central junior running back Brandon Scott ripped off a 35-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, but big plays were few and far between for the Indians (1-1). “Our offense isn’t ready for the Duneland conference yet,” Lake Central coach Brett St. Germain said. “Our guys need to know that. It becomes a different game next week.” Colin Studer made his first career start at quarterback in place of injured starter Alec Olund. Studer accounted for 101 total yards, including three straight first-down runs in the second.

LAKE CENTRAL AND E.C. CENTRAL BLOWN AWAY FOOTBALL GAME CANCELED BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 8 photos
  • ST. JOHN | The Lake Central and E.C. Central coaches and administration waited until the last minute to postpone Friday's game to 7 p.m. Saturday. Officials had hoped to start the game no later than 9 p.m., which means they'd need to take the field no later than 8:30 p.m. Friday. But the lightning wouldn't stop. "We have to decide what is a safe time to start, and we have to wait until the last lightning strike," Lake Central athletic director Tony Bartelemeo said. "We didn't want the kids to be out that late. We're in a good spot, because we didn't take a snap, yet." Lake Central will run its typical Friday routine on Saturday, coach Brett St. Germain said. "We'll make sure the kids go home and get rest and treat Saturday like we would a Friday," St. Germain said. "That does help that we'll have extra time on (Labor Day) Monday. We can turn that into a Saturday-Monday day, so that we technically don't lose a day." Saturdays are different in East Chicago. "We have kids that work Saturdays," Cardinals coach Stacy Adams said. "That's a big problem for us, because the weekend is usually the only time they can get in work. We also have an issue of transportation. Our athletic department has been great and booked all of our transportation months in advance. Now we have to find a way to get here (Saturday)."
