TF NORTH VS BREMEN IN BASKETBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • MIDLOTHIAN | Not that an exclamation point was needed for T.F. North's first quarter against Bremen on Thursday night, but Sadiq Salisu provided one anyway. His banked-in 55-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Meteors a 10-point lead and reinforced the idea that it would be his team's night. T.F. North romped to a 59-23 victory over the Braves, and it was that close only because Meteors coach Tim Bankston took it easy on his South Suburban Blue lodge brothers after scooting to a 39-8 halftime lead.

T. F. NORTH VS OAK FOREST BOYS BASKETBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • CALUMET CITY | T.F. North was in command and it looked like the Meteors would upset Oak Forest. Then the Meteors did what they have done all year. They could not finish off the Bengals. Oak Forest scored the game's final seven points for a 52-46 South Suburban Blue Conference win over T.F. North on Friday. "At the end of the game we got a little selfish and that cost us," North coach Tim Bankston said. "We had people who were open, yet we forced outside shots and they didn't fall. That is the same old story."

T.F. NORTH VS LEMONT GIRSL BASKETBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • CALUMET CITY | The frustration of letting another game get away from her team did not show on the face of T.F. North Chris Pruitt. The second-year coach sat on the bench following the Meteors 34-33 South Suburban Blue loss to Lemont on Tuesday. Her team had been in command until the final 1 1/2 minutes when it was outscored 8-2.But the frustration did show in her voice and she came right to the point about it."There are no excuses or no way I can justify our (lack of) rebounding, lack of communication, lack of desire or lack of hustle," Pruitt said. "We have a lack of desire to win. I can't teach that. We were up and we're taking (long) jump shots. We had turnovers down the stretch and a lack of concentration."

T.F. NORTH VS RICHARDS IN BASKETBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • CALUMET CITY | Despite being a young team, there are no moral victories for the T.F. North boys basketball team. The Meteors fell 61-56 to Richards in overtime in a South Suburban Conference crossover game Friday night at T.F. North. The Meteors battled back from a 10-point deficit at the half, but the young Meteors, who feature only two seniors on the varsity roster, were unable to control the ball in overtime. The Meteors lost 18 turnovers in the game and trailed the entire overtime.

TF UNITED VS OAK FOREST SOCCER BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • CALUMET CITY | It may be too late for Thornton Fractional to win a South Suburban Blue Conference title, but it still isn't taking any games lightly. T.F. United dominated Oak Forest 9-0 in a South Suburban Blue match Thursday. Ray Kobus and Luis Ramirez each scored two goals, and Cristian Gonzalez had a goal and an assist. Jose Sandoval recorded three assists as Thornton Fractional used seven first-half goals to quickly topple the Bengals and force the slaughter rule with a 20-minute second half. "There was a lot of passing and two-touch soccer," Kobus said of the win. "Very unselfish. We played our game today and came out with a good result." Ramirez, a junior, said the team is still a work in progress that has put their 5-15-1 record of 2012 behind them and is playing at another level this year. "We're working and doing good this season," Ramirez said. "Last year we did terrible, honestly. But the bad thing is that these seniors are going to leave, but still we have a good team this year." With a 6-3 record in the South Suburban Blue, the United is preparing for the playoffs and what it hopes will be a deep run. "Our first goal was winning conference or even sharing the title," Kobus said. "Now, we're focusing with our practices for preparing for regionals. We're looking forward to trying to get a regional championship." Kobus, a senior leader on the United, is looking for good practices before the playoffs to help lead the team into the postseason. "Definitely communicating and just keep playing our game," he said. "Finishing and listen to what we do in practice. How we practice is how we play."
