DAYLEN HUBBARD, BLOOM HIGH SCHOOL HURDLER BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 9 photos
  • Daylen Hubbard was right there, going hurdle-for-hurdle with Tifonte Hunt across 110 meters final at the Class 3A Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional. The two seniors were the latest example of the century-old rivalry between Bloom Township and Thornton, and the finish line was looming. It was Hubbard, representing Bloom, at the line. Or was it? The finish-line camera proved it was not. Hunt edged Hubbard by one- hundredth of a second with a winning time of 14.28 seconds in a race so competitive, six of the eight finalists advanced to this weekend’s IHSA championship at Eastern Illinois in Charleston. “I knew what I had to do,” Hubbard said. “I knew there were other state finalists (from last year) in the heat. I wasn’t worried. I was supposed to be a state finalist (in 2013) until I was injured. “When I get in the blocks, I try not to think about it, because I’d be scared. It seems like a hundred hurdles. I’m going to get hit or hit one, so I try not to think about my race. Hubbard thought he was the winner until the announcement that Hunt edged him was made. “I thought he won too,” Hunt said. The consolation for Hubbard was in qualifying again for the 3A battle at O’Brien Field. He was seeded 11th last year, but an injured right hip flexor kept him from running his best time in his heat race. He missed the championship race by a third of a second.
