LOWELL VS WEST SIDE BOYS BASKETBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • LOWELL | It's hard to keep a good man down. It's even harder to keep a great player down. On Saturday night inside The Pit, Lowell proved it is hard to keep a good team getting better down, beating West Side 67-61 in what is believed to be the program's first win over the Cougars. I could go 0-for-20 and if we win I'd be happy, Lowell senior Zach VanHook said after scoring 30 points. He only scored eight against Valparaiso earlier in the week. Times No. 9 Lowell (3-1) was 22-of-31 from the field (71 percent) and 21-of-27 from the line (78 percent). We'll take it, Lowell coach Nate Richie said. We hadn't shot well our first three games. I'm not sure if we've ever beaten them before. No one now remembers the last time.'

BOWMAN VS LAKE CENTRAL BOYS BASKETBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 14 photos
  • ST. JOHN | It lived up to the hype. Times No. 1 Bowman topped No. 2 Lake Central on Friday night in an instant classic in which both teams controlled parts of the game before the Eagles came out on top 63-58. "It was a good game. I loved it," Bowman coach Marvin Rea said. "It was good for the fans, good for the region." Bowman came into the game ranked No. 9 in the state coaches poll, while L.C. was No. 12. The Bowman defense was the difference down the stretch. The Eagles forced 32 turnovers in the contest. "I told my guys, we've got 13 starters. Most teams don't have 13 starters, so we're going to keep the pressure on," Rea said. "Thirty-two minutes of hell is what we're going to give anybody." The Indians (3-1) jumped in front early and led 17-6 after the first quarter. Bowman clawed back in the second quarter, even leading in the final minute, but a Wideman steal and breakaway dunk and a Matt Meneghetti 3-pointer put L.C. up 33-23 at the break. "We played the worst first half of basketball we could ever play," Rea said. "I told them to just stay together, play together, remain disciplined and stick to what we do well, and sooner or later they'll break." The Eagles hit their free throws when they had to in the final minutes. Arthur Haggard made two with 9.4 left on the clock to close out the victory.

LAKE CENTRAL VS MERRILLVILLE GIRLS BASKETBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 14 photos
  • ST. JOHN | By halftime, Gina Rubino had set a personal mark for 3-pointers in a game and had the support of her Lake Central girls basketball teammates to keep shooting. In the other locker room, Merrillville's defense was hearing an earful for letting the Indians' best shooter stay wide open for the entire first half. Rubino had 24 first-half points and finished with a game-high 29 and she led Times No. 3 Lake Central to a 66-57 win over No. 1 Merrillville on Friday. The Pirates were ranked 15th in the state by the IBCA single-class poll, and the Indians were 20th.
