  • CROWN POINT | A high school football team without a good quarterback is like a country with a good president. Please enter your own punchline here. It's like a Beatle without the bangs. Two of the region's best teams – Andrean and Crown Point – faced each other on Friday night in the Hub in the dying spectacle of high school scrimmages. Hey folks, how about a 10th game? Prep teams have about 100 scrimmages in the summer. Why one more? Might as well make this one count. Two of the region's top quarterbacks – Andrean's Matt DeSomer and Crown Point's Jake Jatis – took the field after a crazy, up-and-down summer where both of their futures clouded up a bit. DeSomer spent most of the summer trying to get a baseball scholarship. It hasn't happened yet. And Jatis is recovering from an injury suffered in a scrimmage against Indianapolis Ben Davis. I'm a huge fan of social media. Been told by many that this is the future and it's bigger than Elvis on steroids. (May “The King” rest in peace if he's not at a Dairy Queen in Grand Rapids.) But there are some serious issues with the future.

  • WHITING | "It should have been over a lot sooner than it was." That was the first thing uttered by Adams Central baseball coach Dave Neuenschwander. Down 12-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Bishop Noll roared back with five runs in the inning and had another runner on base, but the Warriors' comeback bid fell short 12-9 in the Class 2A Whiting Regional championship Monday night. Four Warriors reached base to begin the wild seventh as Larry Crisler, Tony Cobb, Matt Sandoval and pinch runner Eryk Jones all scored.

  • HIGHLAND | Paige Heuer had time for a few mildly superstitious rituals, but the senior Munster tennis player didn’t have many moments to absorb her final prep match in Lake County. That’s the byproduct of a 42-minute, 6-0, 6-0 No. 1 doubles match with partner Nikki Heiniger that went to deuce just once. “We’ve been confident going in and just been really strong as a team, going out and taking care of business,” Heuer said. “Mental toughness is just huge right now.” Munster had its second consecutive regional and 28th overall wrapped up early and rolled to a 5-0 win over Whiting in a rematch of last year’s final to win the Highland Regional championship Wednesday evening.
