KANKAKEE VALLEY VS BOWMAN ACADEMY IN THE 11TH ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 12 photos
  • GARY | Kankakee Valley needed only three hits to put an early end to its 10-0 five-inning win over Bowman on Saturday at U.S. Steel Yard. "We didn't hit the cover off the ball, but we were opportunistics a little bit today," coach Doug Greenlee said. "There were a couple of high fly balls that dropped. That helped. Those were tough plays." In the Eagles' (0-1) first game of the season, Bowman officially had four errors, but allowed several balls to drop that could have been caught. "The only disappointment I had was my veteran ballplayers and some of the mental mistakes they made," Bowman coach William Outlaw said. "All the runs were off errors, so once we correct the mental mistakes I think we'll have a great season."

CROWN POINT VS MUNSTER IN VARSITY SOFTBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 9 photos
  • CROWN POINT | Crown Point's youth movement was on display Friday. The Times No. 2 Bulldogs topped No. 3 Munster 2-0 behind the arm of freshman Miranda Elish and the bat of sophomore Rachael Honaker. "I was so nervous (before the game)," Elish said. "But I knew if I came out on my game that we'd win." It was Elish's first high school start and the ninth-grader tossed a seven-inning shutout with nine strike outs against a strong Mustang lineup. She's already verbally committed to play at Oregon. "Everything was working," Elish said. "I threw quite a few bad change-ups, but it threw their eyes off and I'd come back and I'd hit my fastball or my rise."
