TFS VS TFN VARSITY SOFTBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 7 photos
  • LANSING | For T.F. South starter Devin Pieper, it sure makes a day on the pitching rubber easier when your team scores eight runs in the first. The Rebels used an eight run bottom of the first to overcome South Suburban Blue Conference rival T.F. North 17-0 in five innings. Rebels leadoff hitter Marcy Evans was 4 for 4 from the plate with two RBIs and four runs scored. Rebel cleanup hitter Daviea Cowans was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. "I felt energized at the plate today," Evans said. "I felt confident and comfortable. I was seeing the ball well. It was a little cold, but all the hard work we did paid off in the end."

CRETE -MONEE GIRLS TRACK INVITATIONAL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • CRETE | Track meets aren’t won by 84 points. Not even on a chilly, windy day in late March. Tell that to Bloom Township’s girls team. The Blazing Trojans won the 15th Lady Warrior Invitational by 84 points on Saturday, scoring 165 points to more than double runner-up Rich South’s total of 81. And that was with a disqualification from second place in the 800- meter relay. That would have meant eight more points. The Trojans rolled thanks to depth in sprints, distance and success in the field. Much of it was accomplished by two juniors, Ivory Cassell and Gina Narcisi. Cassell won the 100 in 12.62 seconds, anchored the 400-meter relay to victory, won the triple jump, and came in second in the long jump. Narcisi, eschewing soccer this spring for track to go with her cross country exploits in the fall, scored victories in the 1,600 and 3,200- meter runs. Together, Cassell and Narcisi accounted for 58 points. They and Cassell’s relay teammates would have finished sixth in the competition by themselves, and Bloom would have had enough to win with the rest of its team.

THORNTON FRACTIONAL SOUTH VS EAST AURORA IN THE BOB HAMBRIC SHOOTOUT BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 9 photos
  • CALUMET CITY | T.F. South's victory over East Aurora on Sunday at the Bob Hambric Shootout was saved by the backboard. On what would have been a game winning three-pointer at the buzzer, East Aurora's shot attempt grazed the top of the backboard and wiring before falling through the hoop. The shot was called off, and the Rebels held on for the 55-53 victory.
