  • CEDAR LAKE | School is still a few days away from being back in session, but two young teams with a cadre of inexperienced players learned plenty of lessons Friday night. And in a game that featured a grand total of three seniors between the two rosters, a sophomore from Andrean made sure the 59ers started the new calendar year without a slip-up. Just as Hanover Central closed to within one possession of the lead, Andrean woke up behind sophomore Colin Flowers and went on to win 62-43. It was Andrean’s fourth consecutive victory

  • MERRILLVILLE | Andrean senior quarterback Matt DeSomer donned jersey No. 30 of injured teammate David Graham in Friday’s lopsided 58-6 victory over an outmanned Knox at Father Eckert Field in a Class 3A Sectional 25 opener. Graham broke his fibula late in last week’s game against Lowell and is out for the rest of the season. Andrean coach Phil Mason said Graham, a sophomore linebacker, has been playing great and always gives it everything he’s got on the field. “He’s a great kid, and Matt just gave him a little tribute tonight and wore his jersey for him just to keep some spirit out there,” Mason said. Graham’s jersey also had a little magic in it, as DeSomer was a perfect 10 for 10 passing for 141 yards and two touchdowns. DeSomer said he’s been inspired by the play of Graham and wanted to make him still feel part of the team. “I think he’s one of the best linebackers in the area,” DeSomer said. Graham was on the sideline on crutches wearing DeSomer’s No. 3 and said he was honored that DeSomer wore his game jersey. DeSomer aired it out early, connecting with Jamie Johnson on a 61-yard scoring pass to put Andrean (10-0) up 7-0 with 7:50 left in the opening quarter. Trevor Berg broke free from 28 yards out to put the Niners up 14-0 in the first quarter before DeSomer hooked up with Ramon Guerrero from 8 yards out, and Cam Bosak finished an Andrean drive with a 5-yard scamper for a 28-0 lead at the half. “We just kind of kept it simple,” Mason said. “I don’t think we made many mistakes, and I thought our defense played great. We got to play a ton of kids.”

  • MERRILLVILLE | Matt DeSomer turned the ball over three times on Times No. 1 Andrean's first three drives Friday at Father Eckert Stadium. That led to 14 West Side points before DeSomer and the 59ers answered with 36 unanswered points en route to a 65-28 win over the Cougars. The senior quarterback finished with 222 total yards and three touchdowns, despite only playing one series in the second half. The Cougars (0-3) marched 78 yards on the opening drive in a little under two minutes with no huddles. Berrie Wesby punched it in from three yards out. After a failed conversion attempt, West Side led 6-0. DeSomer's turned the ball over twice more on the next two drives, and the Cougars cashed in the second time. Ramone Atkins hit JonVea' Johnson with a 55-yard touchdown pass. After the conversion, West Side was in control 14-0. DeSomer came right back, though, with a 48-yard scoring run of his own. Andrean (3-0), ranked No. 1 in the 3A state coaches poll, forced a three and out and then took it right back down the field with a several runs right up the gut. Cameron Bosak had 27 yards on three carries on the drive, including the seven-yard touchdown that --after the point after-- tied the game at 14-14.
