  • MUNSTER | It’s no secret to fans of Indiana high school swimming that Munster’s tradition of success in sectional competition dates back a long time -- well before any of the Seahorses swimmers were born. Therefore, it’s no surprise the Seahorses will head into Saturday’s Munster Sectional finals the favorite to win their 29th consecutive championship after earning No. 1 seeds in five of 11 events in Thursday’s preliminaries. “We saw some really great swims pretty much throughout,” Munster coach Matt Pavlovich said. “I’m really pleased with the way they swam. We’re set up to have some nice races (Saturday). It’s going to be tough to repeat those times again.”

  • HIGHLAND | Alyssa Kikalos can admit it now. She was not committed to returning for her senior season at Highland, and her absence from every spring and summer workout proved she was serious. Then a week before tryouts, she changed her stance and told coach Tracie Mezera she was interested in playing basketball. Mezera told her it’s all out or all in, no more waffling. Stay or go. All parties involved are happy she stayed. The leading scorer for the Trojans scored 14 points and buried three huge 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Times No. 9 Highland beat No. 8 Hobart 59-55 to hand the Brickies their first loss in Northwest Crossroads Conference action.

  • LOWELL | Lowell’s victory over Highland wasn’t a work of art by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a workmanlike performance by running back George Fields. The senior speedster churned out 245 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns at the Inferno Friday night in a 22-0 blanking over an improved Highland. “The offensive line was opening up holes, and it was just running hard,” Fields said. The Red Devils improved to 3-2 overall and to 3-0 in the Northwest Crossroads Conference with their third straight win. You learn how to win ugly tonight,” Lowell coach Keith Kilmer said. “It took them a while to realize that Highland is just not going to come out and lay down for them. “They played the whole game, and our kids did, too. Our defense played fantastic.” The Trojans managed just 28 yards on the ground and 131 yards of total offense. “We were just reading our keys, linemen were separating and ripping and flowing to the ball,” said Dan Garza, who forced a Highland fumble. Meanwhile, Fields scored his second and third TDs of the game in the second half on runs of 32 and 8 yards. “We were just keying off what the defense was doing,” Fields aid.
