  • LOWELL | It's hard to keep a good man down. It's even harder to keep a great player down. On Saturday night inside The Pit, Lowell proved it is hard to keep a good team getting better down, beating West Side 67-61 in what is believed to be the program's first win over the Cougars. I could go 0-for-20 and if we win I'd be happy, Lowell senior Zach VanHook said after scoring 30 points. He only scored eight against Valparaiso earlier in the week. Times No. 9 Lowell (3-1) was 22-of-31 from the field (71 percent) and 21-of-27 from the line (78 percent). We'll take it, Lowell coach Nate Richie said. We hadn't shot well our first three games. I'm not sure if we've ever beaten them before. No one now remembers the last time.'

  • MERRILLVILLE | Matt DeSomer turned the ball over three times on Times No. 1 Andrean's first three drives Friday at Father Eckert Stadium. That led to 14 West Side points before DeSomer and the 59ers answered with 36 unanswered points en route to a 65-28 win over the Cougars. The senior quarterback finished with 222 total yards and three touchdowns, despite only playing one series in the second half. The Cougars (0-3) marched 78 yards on the opening drive in a little under two minutes with no huddles. Berrie Wesby punched it in from three yards out. After a failed conversion attempt, West Side led 6-0. DeSomer's turned the ball over twice more on the next two drives, and the Cougars cashed in the second time. Ramone Atkins hit JonVea' Johnson with a 55-yard touchdown pass. After the conversion, West Side was in control 14-0. DeSomer came right back, though, with a 48-yard scoring run of his own. Andrean (3-0), ranked No. 1 in the 3A state coaches poll, forced a three and out and then took it right back down the field with a several runs right up the gut. Cameron Bosak had 27 yards on three carries on the drive, including the seven-yard touchdown that --after the point after-- tied the game at 14-14.
