  • CHICAGO HEIGHTS | The sequence might have gone unnoticed by many, but not by Marian Catholic's Spartans. The Times' No. 2 squad, playing a team it had beaten by 30 to open the season, trailed Lincoln-Way East after the first quarter of their Bloom Township Class 4A Sectional semifinal. After finally knotting the score at 26 with 3:12 to play in the half, Marian's defense then frustrated the Griffins for 58 seconds, denying their outside shooters and sealing off the lane, until East turned the ball over on a traveling call. "That's the best feeling in the world," Spartans guard Gabby Cooper said. "It was a big momentum boost," Marian coach Dan Murray said. "To be honest, Lincoln-Way outplayed us most of the first half. That enabled us to take a lead into halftime. That was huge." Eventually, Marian (25-4) posted a 61-51 win to advance to Thursday's title game opposite Oak Lawn (28-1), a 61-56 winner over Marist. Marian will play for its 10th sectional crown in 13 years, Oak Lawn for its first in school history.

  • RICHTON PARK | Thornton's boys basketball team had one wish for Christmas. "The guys really want to play Marian," coach Troy Jackson said. "They may beat the brakes off us, but the guys want to play them." The Wildcats will get their chance to play the Times' top-ranked team by virtue of a 71-67 win Saturday over Bolingbrook in the semifinals of the McDipper, coupled with Marian's 63-43 win over Joliet Central. Thus, the McDipper's defending champion Spartans (9-1) will meet the region's most successful entrant in Rich South's 41-year-old holiday tourney.

  • MUNSTER | Shayley Summers took a bottle near the end of the fourth game and got a fresh diaper in the middle of an intense fifth. The three-month-old daughter of Tracy and Ryan Summers had no idea what was going on just a few yards away from her fourth-row seat Wednesday night at Munster Fieldhouse, but one day she’ll hear tell of it. Her parents staged an epic volleyball match that ended with Tracy’s Munster squad beating Ryan's Marian Catholic team 25-21, 25-20, 24-26, 16-25, 15-7 in a matchup of Times No. 1 teams on opposite sides of the border. Tracy improved to 2-1 all-time against Ryan in their careers as head coaches. "It's exciting, because we both know so many players on both sides of the net," Tracy Summers said. "It's fun to try to guess what he’s thinking and see what strategies he uses. Other than that, it's a great opportunity for us to play a great team." There were no side wagers between the new parents, but Ryan expected dish duty as they exited the gym. "We didn’t say it, but it's kind of understood who's doing the dishes," Ryan said. "But in the end, Shayley wore a Marian ‘M’ on her shirt and not a Munster ‘M’ so I’ll take that." The unbeaten Mustangs (12-0) ran to a 2-0 lead after winning a pair of games that were tied late. Marian (2-6), however, held close in a third game that was tied nine times. The Spartans scored the final three points of that game to win 26-24 and then dominated the fourth set 25-16. "We get so focused the first two games and then back off a lot for some reason and don’t stay as focused," Munster hitter Antonia DalleCarbonare said. "Then we realized we need to step it up and won the last one." DalleCarbonare led the Mustangs with 15 kills and 27 digs, while Shannon Farrell added 13 kills and 18 digs and several mental assists.

  • PALOS HILLS | Jauan Wesley says he can tell when he wins a race, even though he’s looking straight ahead and the fellow next to him is nearly even with him. Call it a runner’s intuition. The good ones have it. Wesley put it to use twice in Saturday’s windblown Stagg Invitational. Both times, the Thornton junior was right, even though he won by the narrowest of margins. The first example came in the 100-meter final. Both Wesley and teammate Jalen Banks breezed in their heats, and when starter Pete Shreck fired the gun for the final, they were side-by-side from start to finish. When they came back to the line to get their times, Wesley said to Banks, “I gotcha.” And Banks said, “But I almost caught you.” Each knew their placing before they were told their times: 10.51 gale-aided hand-timed seconds for Wesley, 10.52 for Banks.
