THORNTON FRACTIONAL NORTH VS JOLIET WEST IN CLASS 4A REGIONAL BASKETBALL GAME BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 13 photos
  • LOCKPORT | When T.F. North's Greg McClain stole the ball and scored an open layup for the Meteors with 3:30 left in the third quarter, no one in the gym knew that would be the Meteors only bucket for the next nine minutes. Still, T.F. North had plenty of chances to pull this one out, but the Meteors fell 40-37 to Joliet West in the 4A Lockport Regional championship.

  • 8 photos
  • SOUTH HOLLAND | Sometimes a close game will wake up a team like a bucket of cold water in the face. That is what No. 2 seed Bloom Township is hoping as it got a wake-up call Tuesday in one semifinal of the Class 4A Thornwood Regional. The Blazing Trojans got it together in the fourth quarter for a 51-36 win against upset-minded Thornwood and play in Friday's title game against the winner of tonight's Lincoln-Way North-Minooka game.

LAKE CENTRAL VS LOWELL GIRLS SECTIONAL BASKETBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 35 photos
  • MUNSTER | Jessica Bell might have made the smartest play of her young life on Saturday night, although it might not be as important in a regular season game. With 13.8 seconds left in a highly-dramatic game, she committed her fourth foul, which was off the ball on Lowell star Katie Bobos, forcing her to make two free throws, as it gave Lake Central the possession. After one Tara Zlotkowski free throw, Lowell had to scurry to get a shot off from the length of the floor. But the Red Devils turned the ball over, and Chrissy Addison made the last layup, as Lake Central fought off Bobos' monster 29-point effort and escaped with a 53-49 victory to win the Class 4A Munster Sectional.

GRIFFITH VS MUNSTER IN VARSITY BASKETBALL BY JOHN SMIERCIAK

  • 12 photos
  • GRIFFITH | Watching methodical Munster play basketball is like watching routine surgery. Follow the plan and the patient walks. It's been that way all season for The Times No. 1 Mustangs: Work the ball around. Find the open man. Take good shots. A miss? Then crash the boards, get the rebound, and repeat steps 1-3. Friday night, doctor and patient both were doing very well as the Mustangs ran away from young Griffith in Northwest Crossroads Conference action, 54-32, holding the hosts to three field goals and 12 second-half points.
