MUNSTER | When Leroy Marsh won his 200th football game as a head coach, he did so with a stout defense and a quarterback in his first year in the program. Marsh and Munster beat Lake Central 27-9 in the opening week of the 2013 season Friday, and the success started in October 2012. "This was started by the team that played Merrillville," Marsh told his players, "those seniors started it, and you're continuing it." Munster lost to Merrillville 28-21 on Oct. 19, 2012 in the first round of the sectional, then hit the weight room. Junior Seth Gutwein scored two of Munster's touchdowns, the first on a 5-yard run to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead and the second on a 92-yard kickoff return after Lake Central pulled within five points at 14-9. "Joey Jumonville did a great job for us at quarterback and has a real solid focus," Marsh said. "Our whole defense was successful for us tonight." The rest of his offense he turned over to senior Jumonville, who was playing football for the first time since his freshman year at St. Rita. After Jumonville committed to take his baseball talents to Northern Illinois, he decided to spend his season with his friends on the football team instead of at fall baseball games.
