  • ST. JOHN | Sam Bell didn't want to give the ball up. Munster baseball coach Bob Shinkan didn't have too many words to say to Bell when he went to the mound with the bases loaded and one out as the Mustangs clung to a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning of Tuesday's game against Lake Central. "He wasn't saying much," Bell said. "'Do whatever you can, buckle down.' He's real superstitious. 'You got it?' he said. 'I know you're tired, but it's OK.'" Bell struck out the next two batters, both pinch hitters meant to ruffle the senior righty as The Times' No. 3 Mustangs topped No. 5 Lake Central 8-4 in the showdown. "(Shinkan) always gives me a chance," Bell said. "I'm at a loss for words right now, this is a great feeling. This is the first time I've beaten Lake Central on varsity. We beat them in football this year and now we beat them in baseball. Hopefully we can keep the streak going in sectionals." Bell struck out six in five innings and his offense spotted him a 6-0 lead after the first. "Sam Bell did an extraordinary job on the mound," Shinkan said. "I know he's a senior and he's one of our main guys. I told him this is a situation he might be put in if he's ever made a closer and to do your best. He wanted to stay out there, that's the kind of kid he is."

  • BEECHER | Beecher's Justin Roggemann was waiting for the fastball, and Roggemann got the fastball. Roggemann scored the winning run on a passed ball to give the Bobcats a 2-1 win over River Valley Conference rival and Times No. 3 Illinois Lutheran. In a 1-1 game, Roggemann started the bottom of the seventh with a lead off double before coming in to score after a Jared Buzan pitch sailed high on Chargers catcher Dylan Gould. With the win, Beecher remained undefeated at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in RVC play. "Coach (Brandon DuBois) told me to be ready for a bad pitch," Roggemann said. "I just saw the chance and took it." Beecher (6-0, 4-0) started the scoring with one run in the bottom of the first. Beecher lead off hitter Cameron Morgan walked to start the bottom of the first then later came around to score on a Dallas Saddler sacrifice. Illinois Lutheran (5-1, 1-1) answered with one run in the third on a Gould RBI single that scored Evan Henschel.

  • HAMMOND | They held a boxing card at the Hammond Civic Center Saturday night and a love-in broke out. Nearly 3,000 fight enthusiasts, friends and family members filed into the old barn at 5825 South Sohl to cheer the inaugural 9-1-1 Slugfest which pitted region firemen against policemen in three one-minute rounds. Proceeds went to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Porter County Sheriff David Lane got the crowd pumped and ready to rumble with his stirring rendition of the National Anthem. Fire wore red, police blue. And rumble they did. It should be noted these were not chubbies who couldn't touch their toes or throw a punch without a chiropractor present. Firemen and cops are in great shape. The lives of others depend on that. They all fought as if they hated each other but afterward, exchanged hugs and handshakes that came from the heart. I think.
